Cutting your own hair? This is how you do it!

Read this properly before you cut off your own hair

A visit to the hairdresser can be quite expensive. Especially if you have a hairstyle that needs to be touched up regularly, you can end up having to pay a lot of money on a monthly basis. We can imagine that you might want to find a way to lower (or even eliminate!) these costs. Playing hairdresser at home might be the way to go, but how do you make sure you don’t mess it up?
Of course, hairdressing is a profession on its own, but it’s not impossible to give it a try at home. It’s important to follow a few basic rules before cutting off your hair, though.

1. Use hair-cutting shears

The scissors you use for cutting open packaging and boxes are better left in their proper place – they’re definitely not suitable to use on your hair. When you do use normal scissors for that purpose, your hair will get split ends sooner and that’s not a good look. That’s why it’s best to invest in hair-cutting shears if you plan on cutting your own hair regularly. This might sound like it will cost a lot of money, but you can get a pair of these shears on the internet for less than 20 euros.

2. Make sure your hair is damp

Dry hair is much more difficult to cut than wet hair. The risk of your hair ending up lopsided is much bigger if your hair is dry when you cut it. It’s best to wash your hair right before the moment you want to cut it and to then make sure it’s towel-dry. Don’t feel like washing your hair first? Then you can use a spray bottle (just like the hairdresser) to dampen your hair. Keep spraying while you’re cutting so you ensure your hair remains damp throughout the process.

3. Don’t try to be too experimental

Trimming a centimetre from your fringe because it’s getting in your eyes is one thing, but trying to transform your long locks into a short bob is an entirely different ball game. A new hairstyle can be difficult to get right and you should know your limits in this case. If you don’t have much (or any) experience in hairdressing, we recommend sticking to the basics. Just trimming the ends seems like the way to go in this case.

4. Hold your locks straight up

Have you ever observed your hairdresser’s technique when they’re cutting your hair? Then you might have noticed that they keep your hair straight up in the air when they cut it. They do this to ensure a breezy result. It’s very easy to do this yourself as well. Pick up a lock of hair between your index finger and your middle finger and hold it up when you trim it.
