A good actor can play any character, from those much younger than themselves to people whose age is far ahead of their own.

Here would like to tell you about several actors and actresses who were brilliant in their portrayal of elderly characters. And we also have a nice bonus for fans of Game of Thrones at the end of the article.

Nemo / Jared Leto

Mr. Nobody, 2009

We doubt we’ll ever see Jared like this because he apparently knows the secret of eternal youth. They say he didn’t like the silicone mask he had to wear for the role, but the role itself was played just perfectly.

Madame Céline Villeneuve Desgoffe und Taxis /
Tilda Swinton

The Grand Budapest Hotel, 2014

The actress masterfully portrayed this elderly aristocratic lady. The makeup was done so perfectly that she became completely unrecognizable. By the way, Tilda will soon add on a couple of dozen years again, along with a change of sex: for her role in Suspiria, she transforms into an elderly man.

Benjamin Button / Brad Pitt

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, 2008

State-of-the-art technology was used to make Brad look old: more than 120 emotions were captured from the actor’s face and then transposed onto 3D models. As a result of this huge work, Pitt sometimes played whole scenes alone, while his doubles often stood in for him in certain scenes.

Daisy / Cate Blanchett

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, 2008

The lead female role in Benjamin Button’s story was played by Cate Blanchett, and her character ages along the way. Her image was created with part conventional makeup and part 3D modeling.

Hanna Schmitz / Kate Winslet

The Reader, 2009

In the movie, Winslet’s character gets old before our very eyes. She had to endure 8 hours of makeup application, but it wasn’t in vain: the movie was wonderful, and Kate won her well-deserved Oscar.

Laura Brown / Julianne Moore

The Hours, 2002

Julianne managed a fascinating portrayal of an elderly lady. Although she herself is now over 50 years old, she’s stopped changing altogether, so we can only see her elderly version in movies.

J. Edgar Hoover / Leonardo DiCaprio

J. Edgar, 2011

Leo is a brilliant actor, and his portrayal of the most famous FBI chief only proved the point once again. By the end of the movie, he was totally unrecognizable with a full face mask, wigs, gray hair, and a prosthetic nose.

Peggy Carter / Hayley Atwell

Captain America: The Winter Soldier, 2014

The actress played her role without makeup but with digital markers on her face. An elderly double was invited whose skin was projected onto Hayley’s face. Technology will probably soon replace makeup altogether, and that’s awesome!

The Witch / Helena Bonham Carter

Big Fish, 2003

Helena’s talent shone the brightest in this movie: the actress was equally marvelous as both the beautiful Jennifer and the hideous witch.

Bonus: Melisandre / Carice van Houten

Game of Thrones, Season 6, 2016

Fans of the show will surely remember the episode at the beginning of Season 6 where Melisandre, the Red Woman, suddenly turned into an old hag. This scene couldn’t do without a double, but the face still belongs to Carice van Houten herself, although with meticulous makeup. The resulting image became a real shock and was remembered by everyone.
